Be Alert! (Mark 13:28-37)

I. Focus on what's most important, vv. 28-31.
A. There will be clues leading up to Jesus' return.
1. The fig tree illustrates the need to be alert.
a. Life returns to the tree in the spring.
b. Specific signs will precede Jesus' return.
2. Who is the generation Jesus spoke about in v. 13?
a. Disciples/believers of Jesus' time.
1) Saw the destruction of the temple.
2) Saw persecution by Rome.
b. Generation can also mean race or family.
1) Believers of any time period.
2) The "family" of Jesus will see it all happen.
B. It is more important to trust God no matter what happens.
1. We are not to count on the signs: they only help prepare.
2. Our trust needs to be in God and His word.
a. Creation as we know it will come to an end.
b. God and His truth is eternally unchanging.
II. Keep doing what you're supposed to be doing, vv. 32-37.
A. God is the only One who knows when Jesus will return.
1. Jesus chose to limit Himself as a human.
2. God is in absolute control of His plan.
3. No one can know the date!
B. God's purpose is to encourage our faithfulness.
1. The story of the house owner illustrates faithfulness.
a. Every servant is to do his/her job.
b. The owner can return at any time.
2. Expectancy keeps us alert and vigilant.
a. Don't sleep- make the most of your time.
b. God provides everyone opportunity and ability.
3. Our faithfulness has incredible importance.
a. Develops our heart for God- Great Commandment.
b. Compels us to make disciples- Great Commission.
1) This world holds suffering and uncertainty.
2) God is in control and has a plan!
Personal Challenges
1. Does turmoil and change frighten you?
a. Read Genesis 1-2. Consider God's power.
b. Read Mark 13. God is still in control!
c. Spend time in prayer simply praising God!
2. Do you know God in a personal relationship?
